Nexplanon
Birth Control Implant
at Mimico Medical

As part of our Culture of Care at Mimico Medical, we are committed to women’s health and family planning for all of our patients. As part of this mission we are ready to consult with you regarding options for contraception.

One of the most effective methods of contraception available on the Canadian market is Nexplanon – a birth control implant that releases medication (a hormone) to prevent pregnancy.

Nexplanon is a long-acting, reversible contraceptive (LARC), just like the IUD (intrauterine device). Its effectiveness lasts for 3 years, but the implant can be removed earlier if desired.

We are trained in administering Nexplanon and are now prescribing and inserting the implant at our clinic in Etobicoke. If you are interested in learning more, our doctors are ready to consult with you and answer any questions you may have.

What is Nexplanon?

Nexplanon is a contraceptive implant in the form of a thin, flexible plastic tube inserted under the skin, on the inner aspect of the upper, non-dominant arm. The tube is 4cm long and 2mm wide – about the size of a matchstick. The implant releases a continuous, low level of hormone, which acts to prevent pregnancy.

The procedure is done with local anesthesia to reduce pain, and the implant is inserted with a needle. No need for cutting or stitching, you simply apply a bandage after insertion. This simple procedure takes place at our clinic – Mimico Medical in Etobicoke.

How does it work?

Nexplanon releases a progestin hormone called etonogestrel, a type of progesterone similar to the kind your body naturally produces.

The contraceptive implant:

  • Prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg
  • Blocks sperm from reaching the egg by changing the cervical mucus
  • Thins the uterine lining, making it difficult for an egg to attach

Nexplanon does not contain estrogen, and is appropriate for women who are breastfeeding and want to use birth control.

Just like other hormonal contraceptives, it can also help with regulating irregular periods, decreasing symptoms of PMDD and improving acne.

How effective is Nexplanon? How long is it effective for?

The Nexplanon birth control implant is 99% effective. Studies of Nexplanon have shown less than 1 pregnancy per 2000 women using Nexplanon – which means it is among the most effective methods of birth control available.

The implant stays in place for 3 years and is effective during that time. When the implant is removed, the effectiveness stops immediately and pregnancy is immediately possible.

What if I want to change my birth control plan? Can Nexplanon be removed?

Yes. If you want to change your birth control plan, then Nexplanon can be removed. The process of removing the implant is simple – just like the original insertion. It is done in the doctor’s office without the need for stitching.

Once Nexplanon is removed it is possible to get pregnant right away. Preganancy can also occur if you’ve had unprotected sex in the 48 hours leading up to implant being removed. Therefore if you do not want to get pregnant, you will need to implement other forms of birth control in and around your Nexplanon removal.

What are the side effects of Nexplanon?

Side effects are mild for most patients. The most common side effect is irregular uterine bleeding. This can mean longer or shorter periods, changes in the length of time between periods, or random spotting. Approximately 10% of patients will experience nuisance bleeding and have the implant removed for this reason.

Other less common but potential side effects include:

  • Bloating
  • Mood changes
  • Nausea
  • Breast tenderness
  • Headaches
  • Weight gain
  • Acne

Is Nexplanon covered by health insurance?

Many private health insurance plans – like those offered by most employers – will cover the cost of Nexplanon. However, you should check with your insurance provider before booking an appointment with us.

For those without private health coverage, Nexplanon can be purchased for around $350.
